Select the design aspects you want to focus on first, try out a few new concepts, or maybe participate in challenges. As all of the class material will be yours forever, you can come back to videos you may have skipped the first time around.

Course information

You will have lifetime access to all the class content.

You can go through the lessons at your own pace. Every week a new part of the course is released. This release schedule is meant to give you enough time for practice.

This course is pattern-based, meaning we will analyse the two patterns Ribbon Candy and Wishbone and their variations in high detail. The focus lies entirely with improving the patterns and the construction of the different variations.

The lessons start with simple step-by-step instructions. The lesson components are intended to teach you new skills and help you unlearn bad habits.

The further along you get in the course, the complexity and intensity will go up.

The lessons are supported by over 120 pages of handouts that contain tracing templates, content summaries and reference materials.

Some lessons will help you escape the traditional borders and sashings and show you how you could apply the patterns as an edge to edge design or as part of a wholecloth design on your quilt.

FAQ

What do I get with the course?

The course consists of 5 modules and an extra four-part bonus module. The course contains over 6 hours of instructions and video footage. You will also get over 120 pages of handouts (PDF and JPEG), tracing templates, content summaries (a.k.a. cheat sheets) and reference books.

What machine should I have to participate?

You can participate with a domestic machine, a sit-down, midarm and a longarm machine. The course footage has been filmed on a domestic machine and a longarm, so there are examples of both these types of machines. You will see me move the fabric and you will see me move the machine.

This course is pattern-based so it focusses on the structure of a pattern. Seeing the pattern stitched out on two different machines, doubles your viewing time.

My domestic machine has a small harp. Can I still participate?

The size of the harp of your machine doesn’t influence the value of the content of this course. You will have to use more narrow quilt sandwiches.

Do I need to be advanced in the free motion quilting technique?

This course was created for quilters who are already familiar with the technique and want to delve deeper into several patterns and expand the designs they can stitch out confidently.

This course is pattern-based and it will not go into setting up your machine. It will not discuss the technique of free motion quilting.

You will need to be able to set up your machine and solve any common issues concerning the technique by yourself. You don’t need to know many patterns. I will take you through each step.

Like with any technique, lots of experimenting and making mistakes is part of the learning process. But the course will help you strengthen your pattern recognition skills and you will learn how to break a pattern down into smaller steps.

The course is structured in such a way that it will take you from simple to more intricate patterns.

The content of lesson 5 is elective, meaning you can pick and chose which designs you want to try.

I am an advanced quilter. Why would I need this course?

Beside expanding your portfolio, there are more things you will take away from his course. Not only is it a great idea to review and strengthen the basics of a design, but delving into the details will allow you to manipulate the design to make it fit your quilts. You will take this new skill and apply it to other quilting designs.

I already know how to do Ribbon Candy and Wishbone. What makes this course special?

This course is based on a marking technique to help you achieve even patterns. This will allow you to improve your patterns, even when you feel that they are already great at them.

The marking technique is mostly intended for the practice samples, but you can use it on your quilts if you want to. Some of the pattern variation benefit greatly from marking your quilt top. Don't be afraid to use marking tools!

A big part of the course is learning new variations of these two basic patterns Ribbon Candy and Wishbone. It will expand your portfolio. You will also learn a lot of different concepts to go around a corner and how to to put the patterns into shapes other than a narrow strip like a border.

Elements from the bonus module will help you move away from the standard border or sashing.

Do I have to be artistic or be able to draw?

The course takes you by the hand to learn to stitch the examples. You don’t have to come up with your own designs, but of course you can if you want to. Don’t underestimate yourself. Everybody will come up with their own ideas and favorites.

The purpose of the drawing components in the class is to ingrain the movement in your brain so you don't have to think about the steps each time. It is not about creating a pretty drawing or piece of art. The drawing is a tool to help you stitch the pattern more confidently.

Do I have to be precise?

Precision is a part of this class, but it is not necessary to be really great at it. Through all the exercises you will gain precision. Practice make progress!

I am not very confident about learning more complex designs. Will I be able to do it?

The course is structured from simple to more intricate, but we will take it slow. The first 3 classes build up your skill by providing step by step instruction. Lesson 4 and 5 let you explore different shapes, corners and many variations. The Bonus elements will be a lot of fun!

You will have lifetime access to the class. You can always come back to the lessons and and they them it again.

Does this course only focus on borders and sashing?

Wishbone and Ribbon Candy are traditionally stitched in borders or sashings. Most of the samples in the course are stitched out within a pre-marked area, which you can interpret as such.

There are several patterns variations though that are very suitable for being applied as an edge to edge design. Broaden your horizons by trying them out!

There are also Bonus components to this course that help you get the patterns out of the borders and sashing and let them be the shining star of your quilt.

I don’t quilt for others or create competition quilts. Why would I need this course?

Certainly not all quilts are made for competitions. But most quilts are special and made with love and intent. Why not add a little bit of magic and extra beauty to your project?

Making your own project look beautiful is the joy of quilting and learning a new part of your favorite hobby will light up your soul.

I don’t have time to go through the course at the moment. Can I go through the course later?

Don’t worry! The course will be yours forever! You can always come back to it when life has calmed down.

The course components are spaced out over a time period of three and a half months so not to overwhelm you. Every week a new element is released. It will feel like a new short lesson each time.

Feedback to your work (photos) will only be provided during the run of the course in the form of personal replies to your comments and several videos composed of students' photos with added information.

After the course has officially closed, you can still access the materials, but new feedback will not given.

How many quilt sandwiches should I have prepared?

That is hard to say. Part of the practice exercises are on paper (or computer tablet). Of course quilt sandwiches will be needed to put your new skills to the test. I would recommend to start with 4 yards for front, back and batting each. You can always add more.

I prefer a solid fabric or a fabric that has a small pattern so I can see my stitches well.

You don’t need to use expensive fabrics or your family's precious heirloom quilt. You can practice on the fabric you have at hand and even double (or triple) up layers to save on batting. And before you know it, you will be putting tops together especially to show off your special Ribbon Candies and Wishbones.

Do I have to mark my fabric? I don't like it.

The course makes use of a marking technique to base your designs on. These markings are intended to be used on your practice pieces mostly. It is up to you to decide if you want to put these guidelines on your quilts or not.

The more advanced design and composition ideas really benefit from guidelines on a quilt top, though!

Why is the course so detailed?

The course has many small details. The further you get in the course, the more those details are already ingrained into your skillset. You won’t be thinking about all the little things most of the time.

This course focusses on understanding the underlying structures and how to manipulate them.

Can I get feedback on my work?

You can add comments and ask for feedback in the lessons on the platform that the course is hosted on. I will respond as quickly as I can with images and / or video commentary. I am in a different timezone from most of you, but I will try to respond within 24 hours. The comments and my responses will be visible for all students to see and learn from. There are 4 planned group feedback sessions that will be in the form of a recorded video.

If you prefer to not show your work to the other students, you can email me your photos and I will respond to those.

Feedback to your photos will only be provided during the three and a half months the course is live. After the course has officially closed, you can still access the materials, but new feedback will not given. You will have lifetime access.

If I don't like the course, can I get my money back?

If you have started the course and before the release of lesson 4.2 you find that the course is not working for you, you can get your money back. You will have to prove that you have done the work and followed the instructions from the lessons.

I don't know if I like your teaching style. Where can I get more information or try out a class?

I have been part of tseveral quilting Summits (Quilting Summit in 2023 and Free Motion Quilting Summit in 2023 and 2024) and I have hosted my own free online course in January 2024 and 2025. Many of you have gotten a feel for my teaching style and tempo. At the moment I have no other free classes for you to take a look at.

My blog, Instagram and Youtube are filled with tutorials that will help you decide if I am the right fit for you. The information on the blog and on social media is less detailed than my courses of course.

What are the dates for this course?

The course will start at the beginning of February and will run to about the middle of May

Lesson 1, 2 and 3 will each have a few days between them. All the modules of lesson 4, 5 and the three bonus components in lesson 6 are all spaced a week apart.

You will find a more detailed description of the class dates within the course.

What does lifetime access mean?

You will get access to the course material as long as the platform it is hosted on, is still in business. If the platform is taken down, I will make every effort to contact you and let you know how you can regain access to your course material.
